Title: Dreams and Nightmares The Martha Whittaker Story
AUTHOR: Shirley A. Roe
It’s the late 1850s, and in a matter of days, eighteen year old Martha Maguire is torn from her pampered life, forced into an arranged marriage without explanation, and shoved onto a ship headed for America.
Martha’s dream of marrying for love becomes a nightmare of being married off to a much older man who has three young children. Martha finds herself filled with many emotions and endless unanswered questions as she is torn from her upper class English home and forced to travel in severe conditions to unsettled Wyoming. Martha’s dreams continually become nightmares as the turmoil, struggles, and unimaginable new life experiences change her into a woman she never imagined she could be.
Shirley A. Roe uses grand historical description to pull the reader back in time. The reader can enjoy the elegant comfort of upper crust English living as well as taste the dust kicked up by the wagon trains and feel all the backbreaking hardships as settlers travel across America to claim open land and create new lives.
Author Shirley A. Roe is the author of A Call to Faith and Freedom and The Whittaker Family Reunion, the sequel to this book. She has won several awards for poetry.
This novel reads easily and is as unpredictable as the ever-changing life and unknown challenges early settlers faced as they conquered a new land. A highly recommended read for those who love a great historical story that feels real. Reviewer: Lisa Haselton, Allbooks Review.
