Title: Deep Thinking the Human Condition: New Ideas We Can’t Live Without
Author: S.A. Odunsi
The quest to end poverty all over the world has repeatedly resulted in failure. Maybe the first step to success is changing our ideas about the world and how it works. The first of a proposed three volumes, Deep Thinking the Human Condition is a warm-up to an eventual solution. Here, S.A. Odunsi argues passionately for an end to credulous belief in modern western academia as a solution to the world’s problems. This is an exhaustive breakdown of why we believe what we do about social science, and how we have allowed it to shape us.
S.A. Odunsi has a lot of work to do in this series of books, starting with uprooting the reader’s ideas about the western academic establishment, seen in this volume, and ending, ostensibly, with a solution to the world’s poverty crisis. The most important thing the reader needs to know before reading is that this is not a book about solving the problem of poverty. It is really a book about changing our ideas about how poverty can be solved. This is achieved by a thorough dressing-down of academic social science. The form of rhetoric used may not be to everyone’s taste, but Odunsi succeeds in raising reasonable doubt about modern western education, social science, and how functionally useful these tools are. The reader does not need to agree with him to be intrigued by his ideas.
S.A. Odunsi is a small business owner who has lived in Texas for twenty-five years, after moving there from Nigeria. Although he has received a formal post-secondary education, Odunsi is firm in his belief that his ideas are based on personal study and investigation.
It may be difficult to find a popular audience for this book, and before the other two volumes become available a judgment cannot be made as to whether or not Odunsi ever reaches his predicted goal. For these reasons, this book can be categorized as a Great Read, with the reservation that the full three volumes may have scored differently. Reviewer: J.
